Codes of Personality

Personality development is a significant topic that is well worth being analyzed. The way people think, the way they speak and behave, the answers they give, the way of their action at a professional, personal, family, social level are influenced by biological and environmental factors, which have to be examined in depth in order to get a clearer perception of personality.

The theory of Carl G. Jung

According to Carl G. Jung’s theory of psychological types(Jung, 1971[1]), people can be characterized by their preference of general attitude [Extraverted (E) vs. Introverted (I)], their preference of one of the two functions of perception [Sensing (S) vs. Intuition (N)]  and their preference of one of the two functions of judging [Thinking (T) vs. Feeling (F)]. Therefore, people are classified into the following personality types:

  1. Extroverts (E – Extraverted) OR
  2. Introverts (I – Introverted)
  1. People who have preference for sensing(S – Sensing) OR
  2. People who have preference for intuition (N – Intuition)
  1. People who use of the function of thinking (Τ – Thinking) OR
  2. People who use of the function of feeling (F – Feeling)

Areas of preferences

The three areas of preferences introduced by Jung are dichotomies (i.e. bipolar dimensions where each pole represents a different preference). Jung also proposed that in a person one of the four functions above is dominant – either a function of perception or a function of judging. Isabel Briggs Myers, a researcher and practitioner of Jung’s theory, proposed to see the judging-perceiving relationship as a fourth dichotomy influencing personality type [Briggs Myers, 1980[2]]:

  1. Judgment (J à Judging)
  2. Perception (P à Perceiving)

Interpretation

  • Extraversion – Introversion: this criterion signifies the source and direction of a person’s energy expression. An extravert’s source and direction of energy expression is mainly in the external world, while an introvert has a source of energy mainly in their own internal world.
  • Sensing – Intuition: this criterion represents the method by which someone perceives information. Sensing means that a person mainly perceives information he or she receives directly from the external world. Intuition means that a person perceives mainly information he or she receives from the internal or imaginative world.
  • Thinking – Feeling: this criterion represents how a person processes information. Thinking means that a person makes a decision mainly through logic. Feeling means that, as a rule, he or she makes a decision based on emotion, i.e. based on what they feel they should do.
  • Judging – Perception: this criterion reflects how a person implements the information he or she has processed. Judging means that a person organizes all of his life events and, as a rule, sticks to his plans. Perceiving means that he or she is inclined to improvise and explore alternative options.

All possible permutations of preferences in the 4 dichotomies above yield 16 different combinations, or personality types, representing which of the two poles in each of the four dichotomies dominates in a person, thus defining 16 different personality types. Each personality type can be assigned a 4 letter acronym of the corresponding combination of preferences.

INTP Introversion- Intuition- Thinking- Perception Engineer
INFJ Introversion- Intuition- Feeling- Judging Confidant
INFP Introversion- Intuition- Feeling- Perception Dreamer

Based on the Myers-Briggs Step I personality assessment

In order to interpret the above table, we should understand that, according to Jung, one of the above psychological functions is always the primary one. That is that either Sensing – Intuition, or Thinking – Feeling dominates over the other poles. The Extraversion-Introversion preference determines the direction of the dominant function. The fact that one pole is primary and the other secondary does not mean, according to Jung, that the second one is not important. On the contrary, it tends to be quite helpful and necessary.

So, these 16 different personality types present a set of traits that make each individual be unique and different from other people.

ISFJ -The defender

Tom Rob Smith: “To stand up for someone was to stitch your fate into the lining of theirs.”

He is a passionate person; he is an individual who uses common sense and his experience in solving his problems as well as the problems of other people. He is responsible, conscientious, loyal, considerate and patient and tries to serve the needs of other people. He is able to provide practical help to other people and he is capable of protecting his own people in any way. He is faithful and loyal either at a friendly or erotic level and he is characterized as being attentive. He is feeler and makes decisions with his heart. Although he is quiet, he cherishes deep connections, seeks lifelong friendships and he lives in the moment. He usually wants to work with people who care and support each other. He is kind and confident, compassionate and caring.

The defender always seeks reassuring evidence and he wants to be appreciated by others. He underestimates his achievements and sometimes other people may step on him since he always tries to satisfy other people’s wishes. He has a good memory and he is using it in order to retain facts and information on people.

He is a pleasant, polite person who cannot be idle. He can easily get upset if his goal is not met, but he will be very satisfied if other people give credit to his efforts and that will suffice for him.

ADVICE “If you are a defender, help other people as much as possible, as long as you don’t put yourself in danger, as long as you defend people in conditions that can be dealt with and as long as you avoid people who try to play on you and impose. Learn to say NO and learn to set boundaries while defending other people, but, above all, you have to learn to defend yourself first. “

ISTJ -The examiner

Menander: “He who labors diligently need never despair; for all things are accomplished by diligence and labor.”

this type is responsible, dependable and loyal. The examiner is dependable and can be counted on. He always has a plan and he is always prepared. He tends to analyze things and he feels save when he is aware of any aspect of the problems he is dealing with. He does well with subjects that require logic, precision and deliberate observation. He sets specific goals, realistic deadlines and he is structured, scheduled and organized. He works hard in order to meet his obligations. He may be perceived as a rigid person because he does not enjoy being the center of attention and he finds pleasure in solitude. The examiner works on real facts, takes people seriously and he is a critical thinker and oriented toward problem solving. Being loyal, devoted and service-oriented, he always has a goal to deal with. He processes information internally, he tries to control things and he avoids making assumptions. Finally, he is punctual and he loses his temper easily; this is why he sets the deadlines and  he prefers to schedule and control things at work. Examiners are service-oriented. They strive to help others in whatever role they play. They take responsibility seriously and honor their commitments. They fulfill duties without seeking recognition. Their strength is their ability to work hard and to make sacrifices to keep society running smoothly.

ADVICE

“If you are an examiner, try to be honest with the others around you, have confidence in yourself, but sometimes accept the opinion of other people. Do not be afraid to show and express your feelings, since they will help you work better with other people around you. Excessive devotion helps you achieve success in your life, but, at the same time, you seem to be unable to release yourself from the bonds that dominate you and move one step beyond the safe space you have built around you. Make sure you have a happy time and accept your mistakes. After all, as humans, we‘re going to make mistakes“.

In case of an error, admit your mistake and you will see how you will work better with yourself and with the other people next time. You know who you are and what you deserve having or achieving, share your knowledge and you will win. “.

You may look stiff and intimidating, and you know very well that your goal is the common good. Use your self-confidence and motivate people. Your energy and determination is contagious. It is true that happiness for you is hidden in the joy of success. Success does not matter for you but also for the people around you who have contributed to it”.

ENTP: Originator

Joseph Joubert: “It is better to debate a question without settling it than to settle a question without debating it.”

The Originator thrives at finding solutions to problems, being inventive, innovative, intellectually quick and skilled at what he does, as he discovers and processes information through patterns and impressions within a system. The Originator enjoys developing strategies and benefits from new opportunities. The Originator is a smart individual who thinks on problems and makes decisions with his head and is driven by logic, even though he, sometimes, avoids making decisions and may be very enthusiastic about the ideas he generates, even if these ideas are not feasible. The Originator is deeply imaginative and his though process is abstract and theoretical. He prefers working on his own and he thrives at finding crafty solutions to technical problems and promoting new ideas and opportunities as he loves to share interests and ideas with those closest to him.

Thus, the Originator sees life as a puzzle where he has to make all the pieces fit together. His greatest contribution is his ability to pursue and succeed at any risk-taking venture.

ADVICE

“If you are an Originator, use your energy and vitality in order to achieve your goals. Work with the people around you as they will generate ideas that may help you aspire to greatness and achieve significant goals. You are able to re-organize things and make all the pieces of the puzzle fit together. Your ideas are original, you are gifted at coming up with new and efficient approaches and you are aware of it. You enjoy the give and take of relationships and love to debate since you are interested in arguments, challenges and projects that can be used and marketed and you learn by arguing and challenging. You are a frank, outspoken individual and this may annoy other people. So, try to be good, well-behaved; this will make you more convincing, more persuasive and acceptable to other people”.

    INTJ – Strategist

“There is always room for improvement you know- it’s the biggest room in the house.” (Louise Heath Leber)

The Strategist is an independent individual who likes inventions.  The Strategist may often define a long-term vision and find innovative solutions when it comes to complex problems. He is a gifted strategist with analytical, conceptual and objective mind and he works being based on logic. His strong will makes him set high standards, take risks and achieve their final goals. He is quite demanding, strict, thick-skinned, hard-headed and unapproachable. He feels comfortable in a demanding environment where he may work with specialists and people who are specialized in their areas.

The Strategist is a gifted theorist. The Strategist thrives on understanding and formulating complex systems. Of all the personality types, the Strategist is the most penetrating in thought and insight. His greatest contribution is his desire to produce mastery and achievement that reflects his brilliant mind.

ADVICE

“If you are a strategist, it would be nice to leave yourself a little free. Being too dedicated at work, you may neglect to consider the contribution of others. It is not easy for you to engage in social discussions as you are considered private, abstract reserved, withdrawn and antisocial. So, try to get more in touch with people around you and share your knowledge with others. Do not prejudiced towards people, not all of them are lazy and selfish. The original ideas will stimulate the people around you and you will impress them with your way of thinking.”

    INTP – Engineer

“If I had an hour to solve a problem I’d spend 55 minutes thinking about the problem and 5 minutes thinking about solutions.” (Albert Einstein)

The Engineer is able to think strategically and create notional models in order to perceive complex problems. He tends to adopt a concise analysis mode of the surroundings and discovers new, innovative approaches. He judges situations based on logic. He thrives on the theoretical, he is a critical thinker and he is oriented toward problem solving by using authentic and innovative solutions. “Learning” and “notion(s)” are paramount concepts of the Engineer. He loves to learn things and his focus is always on his intellectual pursuits.  He works mainly in an environment that provides time and space, although he may not have a clear sense of direction and ignores important facts or practical details. He may concentrate on his tasks and he does not routine, rigid rules and pressure.

ADVICE

“If you are an engineer, then, congratulations for being a carefree individual a person who loves expressing himself freely and spontaneously. You are a creative person with complex and unusual ideas. Be careful, however, because, due to your thoughts that sometimes may be absurd, you may be misunderstood by other people. Try to express your thoughts in a meaningful way so that others can give you an opinion on what you are saying. You are not an ordinary person and you know it. Share your thoughts and beliefs with others, but you should use a bit more logical thinking. ”

 ESFP – entertainer

“I just like having fun and, you know, sometimes I just like to present myself in that fun energy.” (Katy Parry)

The Entertainer is a flexible, adaptable, approachable and friendly individual. He enjoys life and he loves being surrounded by people and being the center of attention. He is a spontaneous individual who cares about other people’s feelings. He enjoys being the center of attention and does not like to share the spotlight. He enjoys working with other people and dealing with new situations. He may share his feelings and he dislikes being alone. He has trouble with long-term commitments and with meeting the requirements and the deadlines. He enjoys starting a task better than finishing it. He has an amazing sense of humor and, if things get too serious in conversation, he may lighten the mood with a joke or a funny story. He likes to build a strong team spirit of cooperation and be tested in new, unknown situations.

ADVICE

“If you are an entertainer, you are a lucky person. Most people around you say good things about you. You bring laughter, joy to everyone around you and you bring people close. However, you should be careful about the way you express your thoughts about some situations because not all the people are so spontaneous and full of humor as you are. Sometimes, this may cause a misunderstanding and lead to unfortunate situations, and, after all, it is not your purpose.”

ISTP – craftsman

“If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again, then quit. There’s no point in being a damn fool about it.” (W.C. Fields)

The Craftsman is a courageous, strong-willed and purposeful individual. He enjoys learning things and improving himself by using his skills. He learns things by doing and by experimentation. He is active and he finds passive learning boring. He is usually calm and he is dedicated to his work and he may judge situations and crises based on logic. He is able to quickly decide on the methods he is going to use in order to solve any problems. He avoids collaborating with others as long as they do not always follow the requirements. On the contrary, he enjoys working alone and tends to practice or do an analytical work. The Craftsman is a spontaneous individual and he often juggles several projects at once.

The Craftsman enjoys analyzing and adjusting until he is able to accomplish his goals. He does not like to just do things. He is focused on the present and he is always looking for ways to improve his skills and he is very adept at problem solving.

ADVICE

“If you are a Craftsman, then you are very adept at problem solving. Thus, you may solve problems effectively. You like challenges and changes and you are bored with the same things. It is good to test yourself in new situations, but, you are too committed to achieving your goal and you forget that you are not alone. The fact that you enjoy working alone may isolate you from other people. Try to be less self-reliant, involve other people in your work and work more with them.”

ISFP – artist

“Sometimes is not the strength but gentleness that cracks the hardest shells.” (Richard Paul Evans)

The Artist is a very interesting and bizarre individual. He is artistic, aesthetically inclined and sensitive. He enjoys helping other people and he encourages others. Sometimes, he avoids making decisions hoping for a better opportunity. He is usually a cooperative, low-profile, sensitive individual and he is gentle and considerate to other people’s feelings. He is skilled at using tools and with problem solving and he thrives when he is given the freedom to create. He prefers working in a carefree environment, without any pressure or competition. However, he may work well with cooperative people as he is agreeable and easy to get along with. His workplace is vital.  He dislikes pressure. In addition, he does not like feeling manipulated. Finally, he is … just a mystery; he dislikes talking too much and he prefers acting than talking.

ADVICE

“If you are an Artist, please accept our congratulations. You are a creative individual who inspires many of the people around you. You care about people but you don’t talk about it. You prefer acting than feeling or thinking. On the one hand, this attitude is positive since acting is more important than talking. NEVERTHELESS, try to express your views and your thoughts in order to be accepted, understood and appreciated by others.

Moreover, since you tend to be less powerful than some other personalities, and, since, most of the time, you have less influence on your workplace and this prevents you from making some decisions. You think too much and that makes you avoid making some decisions or you may make them later on. This will make you lose opportunities that are important to you. So you have to take risks  and express your opinion.”
